The House of Engenho Verde
Tourists and adventurers from around the world visit the majestic "Casa Grande & Senzala." Gilberto Freyre, a famous Brazilian poet and author, captures the Brazilian colonial family perfectly, in his book he said "Casa Grande, supplemented by Senzala represents an economic system, political system and social system of its time," (Freyre, G. 1934).
Built in 1841 by Louis Léger Vauthier (the same engineer of the St. Isabel Theater, Recife), the main house of Engenho Verde, in colonial style, portrays the story of slaves and colonels who lived during the time. The poet and writer Hermilo Borba Filho, was born and lived in the house until the age of 16, his collection was left and is preserved today. The house still displays the style of the time period when the house was built.
